High Five for Friday

Photobucket

This week was mostly taken up by worries over Tropical Storm/ Hurricane Isaac. Other than that, it was pretty quiet. Here are a few good things…

1. Everybody’s ok. Everyone in my immediate family, at least. Isaac was not very bad for us at all. The real worry was for my Jason’s dad and brother, who live outside of New Orleans. We got a short message from him yesterday that everything was ok, but no real details. I know Slidell, that the town we stayed in when we visited them a few years ago had devastating flooding. Really terrible situation and our thoughts are with those in the Gulf region affected by the hurricane.

2. Sherlock. On a lighter note, we finished up the second season this week. I loved it, especially the first episode with the smokin’ hot Irene.

3. Presidential Knife Fight. I stumbled across this post yesterday from the Face In the Blue blog wherein he hypothesizes which president would win if there was a Hunger Games style arena knife fight to the death. Now y’all know I love me some Hunger Games. I also love me some history. So this was probably my favorite read all week.

4. Mojo is running high. I’ve lost count of the scrapbook pages I’ve made this week. It was a lot though. And I could probably sit and do a dozen more right now, but there are other things that are taking away from that… showering, job search, etc.

5. The return of John Stewart. We missed him during the little hiatus.

Linking up with Lauren.

CT Layout- Come Sail Away using Nautical Days by Dana’s Footprint

Nautical Days is a great kit by Dana’s Footprint. I love the realistic ellies and the worn, beachy look.

I’ve been wanting to lift this LO by blondy that I’ve had in my favorites folder for a while. I had it on reserve because I knew it would be great to use if I hosted a speed scrap. So a couple of weeks ago our regular hostess asked me to fill in for her and I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to scrap this page.

I call it my “hot mess page”, though I mean it in a good way. 🙂

Tropical Storm Isaac

All last week we kept an eye on the weather. We thought we probably wouldn’t be in the direct line of fire, but we knew we would get some bad weather. I was getting used to bad weather. We had been having lightning storms almost every day that week.

We wanted to be prepared for the worst, so we spent Saturday getting ready. Jason found extra candles and flashlights. I checked the supplies we had on hand and made a list. I double checked a few Hurricane Preparedness sites, especially how long food is safe to eat after the power goes out.

We went to the store for our regular Saturday shop and to get a few extra gallons of water. It was packed, because of course everyone was losing their everlovin’ minds. We got the essentials- water, cat food, beer, and Fritos. We got home and settled in to watch the second season of Sherlock.

Jason called to check on our friends Antoine and Heidi. Heidi’s dad passed away last week and we wanted to make sure they were ready for the storm. They hadn’t been shopping, so he said we’d pick up some water and stuff and bring it to them. We had a nice evening talking, watching TV, and playing video games. It was a nice distraction from worrying.

The next morning we watched the Weather Channel and ate a lot of junk food. It started raining heavily and we went out to take pictures.

Jason moved all the plants into a corner out of the wind.

Miss Kitty was unimpressed by the whole thing.

Jason and I are storm spotters, so I did a lot of tweeting and posting to FB to keep people updated on the storm.

We went through several squalls throughout the day. “A little wind, a little rain” as Jason says. It actually wasn’t that bad during the day. We spent a lot of time outside on our patio or front porch.

When it got too bad, we would head back in and watch more Sherlock and play video games.

We thought we had seen the worst of it. The radars were showing that most of the storms had passed us. I did the speed scrap at SDD. Towards the end of the SS it started storming and this time there was a lot of lightning.

There had been sporadic tornado watches throughout the day, one possible tornado had even come as close as Lake Worth. They issued a blanket tornado watch until the next morning.

We started getting ready for bed around midnight and the storm was still going strong. Then the power went out. It was on and off throughout the night. It came back on for the last time just in time for Jason to get coffee before heading to work.

All in all, for us it wasn’t a very bad storm. It was nerve-wracking, especially with all the lightning towards the end.  But no damage to our house, everyone was safe, and the power was only out for a couple of hours. Very grateful for that.

*These are a mixture of pictures taken by Jason and me and put up on instagram. Jason took some pretty awesome photos with our other camera. I’ll post those once I get them shrunk down and web-ready.

CT Layout- Need For Speed using I Am Speed by 3 Lil Monsters

Okay these kits that Amy from 3 Lil Monsters made are too cute! I’m all about boy kits and travel kits this month and this kit could be used for either.  And of course they’d be a great choice for any Cars fans in your life.

I made this page with a picture from our recent St. Augustine trip. I’ll get around to blogging that sometime soon. We had such a fantastic time showing Little Man and Jason’s dad around the town we love so much. I made the LO for the template challenge at SDD earlier this month.

CT Layout- Mini Golf using His Favorite Things by Dana’s Footprint Designs

I got to play with this cute kit by Vicki of Dana’s Footprint Designs. I’m a sucker for boy kits, and this one has a lot of sporty elements. I love the colors and Vicki is great at richly textured papers. I really like that metal alpha too.

I did this simple LO about a family mini golf game we had a few years ago. I didn’t do journaling here because it wasn’t necessarily a very fun outing. We’ll just say that someone in the family is a terrible sport whenever he doesn’t win and leave it at that. 😛 But the photos are cute and I enjoyed working with the kit. 🙂

CT Layout- Travel the World With You using Magic Travel by Snapwings

Yay another travel kit! I can’t get enough of them. I love the retro look of this one by Snapwings. This is the first kit of hers that I’ve used. I liked it so much that I used nearly every single element in it.

I was inspired by several things in this LO. When I saw the preview for the kit, I knew I wanted to cluster all the elements around the edges of the page. I have lists on my mind a lot right now because I’m working through 30 Days of Lists for upcoming posts, starting September 1st. So of course the natural conclusion of that thought train was to make a list of places where we would like to go. This doesn’t even scratch the surface of all the places we want to go, but it’s a start. I wanted to use different fonts for each place. A few I already had, but it was fun scouring the web for new ones. Then I remembered the font challenge at SDD this month, and added a couple of photos to meet the requirements. If you can’t tell from this explanation, this page took a Long Time to put together. I haven’t spent this long on one page in a long time. But I really enjoyed each step of putting it together. And it’s made me want to learn more about using styles on text, which is something I know next to nothing about. Thanks for looking 🙂

Memory Monday- Hurricane Wilma (October 25, 2005)

This post marks my 101st blog post! Pretty excited about that!

I’m taking a page out of Katie the Scrapbook Lady’s book and starting a new series of posts called Memory Monday. I won’t do them every week, but at least once a month I want to write about something that happened before I started blogging. Just a fun trip down memory lane. And I love taking blog posts and turning them into journaling for layouts.

Yesterday we felt the effects of Tropical Storm Isaac, so I have storms on the brain. Luckily we’re all safe and have power back on now. I’ll write up our experiences with that tomorrow probably.

To help me remember some of the details about Hurricane Wilma, I turned to Wikipedia. Of course that’s not the most trusted source around, but I just needed a memory jog.

Wilma hit our area as a Category 3 hurricane on October 25, 2005. This was two months before we got married, so I was still living in Nashville but I’d come down to visit Jason and stay for a week or so. This was only my second visit to WP, and my very first hurricane. Jason had gone through two hurricanes the previous year, so he was more used to it all. He has always had a very laid back attitude towards storms. “A little wind, a little rain”. I don’t remember being very scared, but I must have been pretty nervous, because I plowed through almost an entire bag of Doritos the night before while watching the news coverage. Ever since then, I always need something salty and crunchy to get me through storm nerves.

We could have used either of the bathrooms in our old place as a safe room, but for some reason we decided to pile up in the upstairs hallway. We had blankets to hide under if necessary. We talked and napped a little. At some point my mom called on the home phone. This was before I had a cell. I went downstairs to answer it because I thought it Must be important if someone was calling us in the middle of a hurricane.

The conversation went like this-

Mom- Watcha doin’?
Me- ummmm… kind of busy being in a hurricane right now…

She hadn’t been watching the news and had no idea we were even in the pathway of the storm. It was pretty funny.

So we made it through. I don’t have a lot of memories of the actual storm, except that it was loud. Not tornado loud, just really strong windy storm loud. At some point we lost electricity. And water. I’m mostly ok with no electricity, but for some reason I freak the eff out without water. I can’t stand not being able to wash my hands. It took us a day or two to get water, but it was still under a boil order. Which would have been okay but we didn’t have electricity for almost a week.

We ventured out to check out the damage and forage for food. Our neighborhood had some damage and several trees that had fallen or lost limbs.

One interesting sight was at the Texaco.

But despite everything, the sun was shining and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.

The next few days were kind of a blur. We went downtown and got to experience Price Gouging at Cheeburger Cheeburger. $30 for two hot dogs and two cans of soda. Unbelievable!

Another night we walked around the neighborhood and came across a taco truck. This was before food trucks were cool. We ate the most delicious pork tacos ever. Also super cheap. I think that was my only other hot meal all week.

Jason went back to work and I was at home for a couple of days by myself. Luckily it was nice and cool, so I was ok without having AC. I hung out, cleaned, read a Steven Womack book, and ate a lot of Halloween candy. I had to throw out all the food in the fridge and freezer because we were out of power for so long. Jason’s company gave away free supplies and he brought home ice one day. It was one of those really really grateful for the little things moments. Ice is a wonderful thing when you don’t have a working freezer. I remember being cranky because the only sound I could hear was the roars of other peoples’ generators. You really start hating your neighbors with generators when you don’t have one.

The morning I was supposed to leave to go back home, I woke up at about 3 or 4 to discover we had power! It would have been nice to have it back sooner, but at least I got to have a hot shower before I got on a plane.

So that was my first hurricane experience. 🙂

CT LO- You Make Me LOL by Partners In Crime… Or Embarrassing Tales From the Grocery Store

This kit is really cute… and not necessarily very many. So Of Course I had to do a layout about my man with it 😛 But he does make me LOL, especially in the grocery store. We act so ridiculous. Unfortunately when I made this LO, I couldn’t think of good journaling. And now I’m thinking of all kinds of silly things we do.

Like holding up huge vats of mayonnaise and giant cans of tuna for photo ops.
And dancing to the music from the overhead speakers.
And the time one of my coworkers said he saw us at the grocery store and I said “Why didn’t you come say hi?… oh were we doing something embarrassing?” And he kind of looked at me and I just knew we must’ve been kissing or groping or singing or dancing or something equally inappropriate. *sigh*

So maybe that LO is better off without journaling now that I think about it.

Thanks for looking 🙂

CT Layout- Camping using Nature Girl by Partners In Crime

I’m a little behind on posting my CT LO’s here, so I’m going to do one or two a day until I’m caught up.

I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do the Nature Girl kit justice. I am no fan of camping. Then I thought, why not do a page about that? And it turned out pretty cool 🙂 This is one of those LO’s that was very much inspired by Stacey Julian. I love pages that show relationships or different people’s takes on a subject.
