New Releases for February 1st

I have lots of pages to share today, so let’s get rolling!

First up are my LO’s for Simple Scrapper. I love that the monthly themes help me go beyond scrapping events, and tell different kinds of stories. I feel like I stretch myself with each one.

Journaling reads- My favorite parts of the day- watching the news together in the morning, because we’ve only been able to do that this past year. Snuggling with miss kitty after Jason leaves, because she’s only been doing that recently after years of standoffishness. Curling up together before we fall asleep, because we’ve done it for years and will do it for many more.

Journaling reads- You make me cry every time you give me a card or letter. I know to grab tissue before I even open it. I can’t help it, your words mean so much to me.

Mandy has a sweet new release today called Touch the Sky, which I used to scrap another  Louisiana road trip page. I love that I kept notes along the way, or I totally would have forgotten about these little details.

As soon as I saw February’s Monthly Mix at GingerScraps, I knew exactly what I wanted to scrap, staying with Melissa last year.

Best Friends collab by the Gingerbread Ladies (kit and template)

Journaling reads- Melissa let us crash at her house while we were in town for Jon’s memorial service. It was great seeing her, even though it was for a sad reason. We stayed up late talking, and we got to meet Aaliyah for the first time. February 1, 2014

One more from the Best Friends Monthly Mix, this time using one of the templates. I loved the cards from the Honeymoon collection, so I let those stand in for a title and journaling.

Christmas Outtakes using Tinsel Town by Mandy King

Tinsel Town by Mandy King

I am so in love with Mandy’s new kit! I just wanted to take every single ellie and throw it on the page. So I kinda did. So much that it’s almost hard to see the pictures, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since they’re not exactly stellar. There you can see some of the hard work that goes into creating an awesome family photo with an uncooperative kitty. (For more of that, see my Three Times Twelve posts).

Leaf Dancing LO’s

Leaf Dancing by Mandy King template by Mye de Leon Leaf Dancing by Mandy King

Yay for yummy fall kits! Mandy has a gorgeous new Grab Bag for October called Leaf Dancing. Of course living here doesn’t give me a lot of fall photos to choose from, but luckily we go places like Chattanooga so I can have lovely autumn pictures. 🙂

And that squirrel journaling card was just too adorable not to use. (I stole that photo and the quote from Jason’s FB status awhile back). I feel like I make a lot of LO’s involving squirrels. I still find it difficult to spell squirrel correctly. So maybe if I type squirrel enough times, it’ll sink in. Actually it won’t since I just misspelled it again. Geez…

So if that’s not enough fluffy-tailed LO’s for you, here’s another. Oh and one more. Is it weird that I have more squirrel related pages than I do of certain family members?

Playing with the Project Life app

I was skeptically optimistic when I heard Becky Higgins was doing an iPhone app. Though I’m a huge fan of Becky and the whole PL system, I think her digital products are overpriced for the digital market. Most of her core kits are $20, and I will never pay that much for a kit, unless it’s for charity.

I was pleasantly surprised at the pricing for the app. You get a few card sets free with the $2.99 app, and you can purchase additional ones for $0.99-1.99. The app comes with several template styles and photo collage templates. You can also purchase more if you’d like. I found the whole pricing structure much more reasonable than her other digital products (although I’m not sure if you’re getting the entire kit when you purchase through the app. I will confirm this when she adds more kits that I own)

I love that you can choose between squared and rounded corners. The cards fit well into the slots for either choice. I love the ease of it all. I did three pages in an afternoon. It was so fast! I love that I can easily scrapbook on the couch while Jason watches football. I like that I’m getting to use kits that I wouldn’t be able to buy at the regular digital price. I super love that when you type onto a journaling card, the text wraps around perfectly so you’re not typing over the embellishments on the card. I can’t even do that in PSE!

A few things that I’d like to see in future updates- An option for drop shadows, either within the app, or an option to export the templates on a transparent background so we can add our own. This might not be a big deal for paper scrappers using the app, but I’ve heard several digiscrappers complain about this. We don’t like flat looking pages. I’d also like to be able to write text on the photo spaces. There are workarounds to this by using other apps to add writing, then importing those into the PL app, but it would be nice to be able to skip this step. The photo editing in the PL app is extremely basic. You definitely want to do that in a different app as well.

How I plan to use the app. I probably won’t use this app for everyday scrapbooking. I love the clean look of my PL pages this year, but I will definitely consider using the app to catch up on previous years. I have a feeling that I’ll use the app a lot on multi photo collage type pages. Pages where I have a ton of photos, but I’m not really inspired to make pages with them so they’ve been sitting on my HD for years types of pages. Travel, scenery, holidays, etc.

Here are the pages I’ve made so far with the app-

IMG_0617

This was the first one I made, using the Midnight kit. I just used pictures I had in my camera roll and made a quick little page about what MK has been up to lately. I think I used the photo editing within the app, but I might have used Pic Tap Go.

IMG_0618

The other photos on my camera roll were from our recent day in Boca. I used the Kraft kit and one of the Squared Away templates (in-app purchase). The Kraft kit doesn’t have square cards, so they’re a bit wonky looking. But I like it, it looks different.

IMG_0616

This is where I started getting really excited about the app. I’ve been wanting to scrap our 2009 trip to California lately. The photos needed a lot of help, so I edited them in RadLab on my computer. I created a “To scrap” folder in Aperture and shared it with my iPad. I was then able to use the edited photos in the PL app. I did all of that, including buying the Travel kit and putting the page together, all in less than 15 minutes. That’s when I figured out exactly how I wanted to use the app and how it would impact my scrapbooking. I was so excited!

I’m also really excited to try scrapbooking on the go. We’ll be going up to New Orleans this fall, so that will be the perfect opportunity to test it out! I can see myself scrapbooking in all sorts of exotic locations. The memory keeping possibilities for our summers alone are endless.

Has anyone else out there tried the app? I’d love to hear about your experiences and see your pages 🙂

These are numbers 6-8 of 25 pages I want to make in September.

I love snails.

I recently discovered the secret to perfectly peel-able boiled eggs! Put your raw eggs into water that’s already boiling. I’ve always done cold-start boiled eggs, so I guess that’s why my eggs always looked so awful and never peeled right. It’s like magic!

IMG_9300

Little Man got some funky sunglasses and sent us a pic. Love how you can see his hand in the reflection. I can’t get over how long his hair is! It’s going to take some getting used to. But it’s his head so….

IMG_9310

Double rainbow!

IMG_9316

My seedlings are coming right along. Amazingly all my orphaned plants are still doing well. I’ll need to do a garden update soon.

IMG_9321

I tried the new caramel crunch frappuccino. It’s pretty tasty, the “crunch” comes from bits of toffee.

IMG_9330

We got library cards!

IMG_9390

I’ve been without a pedometer since I lost my fitbit in December. I need to see numbers for motivation, so I picked up a cheap one at Target.

IMG_9362

Jason did some repair work on the RC car and we took it out for a spin at the park.

Who’s the prettiest girl?

IMG_9404

I’m working on hanging things on our walls finally. Last time I meticulously measured everything out and they were still not evenly spaced. This time I just guestimated and used my fingers as measuring tools.

And lastly, today is the nine year anniversary of our first meeting IRL. I will say a lot of things privately today, but I do want to say here- Thank you for taking a leap of faith and getting on a plane and flying almost 1000 miles to come meet me. Thank you for that first hug that changed my life. You still make me feel giddy and awkward in the best way. ❤

From our weekend

Last weekend we spent a much needed three days at home together. Jason took Friday off and we saw The Amazing Sider Man 2. We had a Starbuck’s date and tried out lots of new cheeses at The Cheese Course.

Saturday was the kickoff of iNSD and I got in a full day of scrappy goodness. I made ten pages, which is a personal record! Jason did a little gaming and watched movies.

Miss Kitty has been super snuggly and wanting All The Attention since we got back from Orlando.

Sunday we had our first swim at the new place. It was lovely. We did a few laps and sat in the hot tub, which did wonders for my knee. We came home and got caught up on Once Upon A Time. Can’t wait for the season finale on Sunday!

Looking back- Three Times Twelve

We are about to embark on our third year of monthly family photos. This year was not as successful as 2012. I did take a lot of family photos, especially this summer. But blogging about them tapered off at the end of the year. And I never did get around to blogging my huge summer photography project, where I attempted to get 100 family photos in a five week period.

I absolutely want to continue taking family pictures in 2014. I’m really hoping to get a camera remote this year so hopefully it will make things easier. It’s quite difficult juggling a camera phone and an angry cat at the same time!

Curious about Three Times Twelve? It’s pretty simple. Sometime in 2011 I ran across this blog from Tara Whitney. She wanted to photograph her whole family, once a month, for a whole year. (Since then I’ve found a couple other people doing something similar, but she’s the one I got the original idea from). So I decided to do that for our little family. Three Times Twelve- August

Three Times Twelve- June and July

IMG_0977IMG_3840

We didn’t get a picture of us with Miss Kitty in June. Or possibly we did, but I can’t find it in the 5,644 photos we took that month. So June’s family photo is of Jason and I picking up Little Man at the airport. It’s a pretty tragic photo, but I love it. It shows the giddiness we all felt after seeing each other for the first time in a year.

July’s picture shows us all at the house. Pretty awesome in it’s normalcy. One of my favorites this summer.
